An encounter between Elizabethan England and the Dhrupad tradition at the Moghul court of Akbar the Great.
Dhrupad is one of the oldest and purest genres of Indian classical music, sometimes described as ‘the impassive word’. The beginnings of this tradition can be found in the expression in music of ‘Om’. Romina Lischka and the Hathor Consort combine this tradition with consort music, or polyphonic instrumental music, which was one of the specialities of English composers in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The fantasia was a very popular element of this tradition. Dhrupad fantasia is an ode to the imagination, bringing together two fascinating traditions.
