Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria e Imeneo

LES MUFFATTI

A wedding ceremony is also a way of openly declaring your intention to care for each other. In 1725, the French king Louis XV and the Polish princess Maria Leszczyska said “I do” in the gardens of the French embassy in Venice. Antonio Vivaldi’s cantata Gloria e Imeneo was commissioned for the occasion. The two characters in the song compete with each other in their praises and advice for the young couple. The duel between La Gloria, symbol of the king of France, and Imeneo, the god of marriage, is Vivaldi at his best.
