"The silence of the world before Bach" is the evocative title of a book of poetry by Lars Gustafsson. In that silence, the music of Heinrich Schütz, the German early baroque composer who exchanged the earthly for the eternal 350 years ago, can at least be heard. In the Schütz Year, Ensemble Polyharmonique focuses on the so-called Geistliche Madrigale. The composition Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes gave the title to their concert programme, which combines work by Schütz with that of contemporaries such as Christoph Bernhard and Andreas Hammerschmidt. Fazit: the silence of the world before Bach is a grandiose silence.
