Exhibition opening: The visual scores of Frie J. Jacobs

On the occasion of Musica Divina, a selection of visual scores by Frie J. Jacobs will be presented at the Galerie Wouter De Bruyckere in Antwerp.
Several of the scores will be performed live at 16:30 by Floris De Rycker (lute) and Sebastian Enriques (accordion). They will also feature at Musica Divina: on 18 September at the public psychiatric care centre in Geel, on 19 September at Averbode Abbey and on 22 September at Postel Abbey. The exhibition can be visited until Sunday 13 October at the Galerie Wouter De Bruycker, Lange Koepoortstraat 60 in Antwerp. It is open every Thursday to Sunday from 11:00 to 18:00.

"You could say that music and visual art are both languages without words. Languages that predate language. They have something else in common: abstraction. Which means they are – or can be – universal and also that we are able to say what we cannot say. I don’t usually have a plan for my scores, or by extension for any of my work. I can’t and don’t want to rule out coincidence. In other words, there is quite a lot to improvise. The ‘illegibility’ of the score leaves the performer totally free, but also forced to draw on themself and at the mercy of... improvisation. In the materials used – fire, wind, seeds, plants and so on – a guideline may be found. These are things that have taken on many meanings throughout our history... Although they should never get in the way of someone's personal story.” (Frie J. Jacobs)
