What is truth? Does the truth reside in ourselves or outside ourselves? How can we reach a truth through inner experience that equals or deepens rational knowledge? Buddhist philosophy speaks of the ‘pure experience’. The Taoist philosopher Zhuhuang Zi says: “That which can be described by words, which can be achieved by intelligence, reaches as far as those things. No further.”Els Janssens takes the audience through various world views based on Ulrich Libbrechts’ model, which places humanity, the world and the cosmos in a clear conceptual framework. She uses this model to show how cultures have different understandings of reality, meaning and truth. Poetry is a second strand of her lecture: short examples help the audience feel how language can reveal moments of truth.
