Bâtard – Da Vinci as freebooter

Ratas del viejo Mundo led by Floris De Rycker

Leonardo da Vinci certainly did not paint by numbers. The ensemble Ratas del viejo Mundo goes in search of original brush strokes. With Italian and French repertoire from the late Middle Ages and Early Renaissance, they paint a picture of Leonardo as a free spirit: a left-handed man who wrote in mirror writing and bought birds to set them free. An illegitimate child who conducted his own research without much regard for the prevalent traditions of his time. He delivered his work too late and sometimes not at all, needed to get hold of human corpses to study their anatomy and knew that the sun does not move around the earth. Bâtard is a combination of instrumental music, traditionals and polyphony that is every bit as unconventional as the man himself. The result is a breathtaking musical ride.
